Part 9 - Wonderful wonderful Copenhagen!

In our last episode ...
- our heroes had survived the 2000k trip from Szeged in Hungary back to Aalborg in northern Denmark via lakes, mountains, rivers & lots of mud
- spent a day cleaning said mud from Nimbus & Trannie & packing weeks of gliding gear into manageable luggage ...

Wed 18 aug - while Karen off to work, Anders, Ingeborg & Gudrun drove us to Aalborg airport - many thanks & goodbyes! Luckily we got the last 2 seats to Copenhagen (RJ900) - needed a rest dragging the "manageable luggage" from Metro to our boat - but becoming expert with a "train" of 2 wheelie bags in one hand & a carry bag in the other ...

Yes boat - with a Gay event on, any "budget" (as far as Skandinavia does "budget") accom was booked so we stayed on the "Arctic Janus" (cross between a sea kayak & a 2 seat glider!) moored at Christianshavn, just across the main canal from the city & walking distance to everything

Walked past Amalienborg Palace where the Royal family live - and climbed the dome for great views of the city ...

Saw the changing of the guard - but unfortunately not Mary & Fred - Mary was at a birthday party in Adelaide!

David? Are we in the wrong city? (he was advertising a huge collection of casts of famous sculptures)

Tom wanted to take the Royal yacht Dannebrog (1932) out for a spin

Went to where the Little Mermaid isn't - cause she's at the Shanghai expo

Walked round the Kastellet, a C17 fortress still used by the military but open to the public (oo, wonder would Richmond consider opening their airspace??) - complete with windmill.

In the evening rain we took our rum to the Arctic Janus bridge & enjoyed views of the city.

Thurs 19 aug - breakfast on the deck

Walked to Christiansborg Palace (parliament, not residence)

Exercising the royal horses ...

At the national museum we arrived in time for an English tour - our guide specialised in the Innuit - excellent collection of sea kayaks!

At the Danish resistance museum we learned how they fought the Nazi occupation, from passive resistance to active fighting - and helped 6000 Jews escape, mostly to Sweden - this was a homebuilt armoured car jobby

Rested our tired legs on a canal cruise - very tight squeeze under some of the bridges!

Their opera house is ok - but not as good as ours - m'be it was designed by an Australian! (but just look at the sky!)

There are bike racks & multi-lane bike highways (not just white paint) all over town - but the main station has double decker bike racks!

Fri 20 aug - walked to Vor Frelsers Kirke & climbed the corkscrew spire ...

For more spectacular views over the city (the Arctic Janus is hidden behind the large red roof in the centre)

Thank goodness for bow thrusters!

Spent another hour in the National museum rushing thru Danish history from stone age to present

Quick walk home, dragged the luggage back to the Metro, just squeaked onto the late pm London flight (A319), & then had to slum it in first class on a 744 - these primitive sleeper seats are hard to take after the "cabins" on the 380!

Sun 22 aug - our heroes arrive home after many adventures around the world!

Part 8 - Tom & tom tom trailer touring Teutonia

In our last episode ...
- our heroes had a few days R&R in Budapest while 4M got a face lift (we didn't cause all of it!)

Tue 10 aug - Train back to Szeged, fixed the jockey wheel which had exploded while we were away & finally drove out of Szeged

With some creative parking at a very crowded campsite, we camped on the shores of Lake Balaton (central Europe's largest lake) - enjoyed an evening walk along the lakeshore to a wine festival, concert & market

Wed 11 aug - drove along the lake shore - couldn't even think about stopping the nimbus trailer on the beautiful Tihany shoreline - so failing water views found a lunch spot with helicopter gunship views ...

Continued on to climb the Szigliget fortress ...

Swam in Lake Balaton and then in the thermal (33 deg) lake at Heviz ...

Thu 12 aug - more creative parking in Koszeg (Hungarian-Austrian border)

Our breakfast waitress (for Graham & Mark's benefit)

Koszeg Sacred Heart Church

OMG wish we hadn't told the Tom Tom to avoid freeways - the road to Wiener Neustadt was like five Macquarie Passes - would've been great fun on the Honda, less so with Nimbus!

Wiener Neustadt aircraft museum - car or glider?

Found a nice camping spot by the river (near German border)

Fri 13 aug - another history interlude at the Nabburg gate

Weather turned to worms - must be visiting a gliding comp! Swaantje flying the German Women's Nationals at Zwickau - 5 mins after arrival we were bogged ...

and so was Swaantje's trailer (they hand pushed all trailers to the hard stand for scrutineering) ...

and her tent ...

But Tom found himself ...

Sun 15 aug - time to leave so 4WD Tiguan to the rescue!

Mon 16 aug - 4M & Trannie devoid of all remnants of Zwickau mud & safely home in Anders' shed

In our next exciting episode ...
- will our heroes get to see Mary & Fred in Copenhagen?

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Part 7 - Budapest - new city, new camera!

In our last episode ...
- the world comps were over bar the shouting
- our heroes were recovering from being robbed while derigging on the last day

Sat 7 aug - Tom & I were the sole Aussie reps at the closing ceremony in the hangar under cloudy skies - all new champions received medals, trophies & invitations to the Heli Lasch challenge in South Africa. We left 4M for a paint touch-up & hitched a lift to Budapest with Beryl Hartley & Toshi (Mac's team manager) as the weather changed to the best skies we have seen so far!

Walked round Margaret Island in the Danube - beautiful parklands, aquatic centre and site of the 2010 European Swimming Championships - later met Beryl & Schmiddy for dinner with Danube views & soft music

Sun 8 Aug - caught the Metro (the 2nd oldest in Europe after London) to the main station to buy our tickets back to Szeged, then Media Markt for a new camera, then the Hop On Hop Off bus tour of Budapest ...

first the Pest side of the river ... Houses of Parliament - magnificent

Heroes Square

Anonymous Restaurant ....

Named after Anonymous (of course!)

Houses of Parliament from the river cruise (worth a second shot!)

Sunset cruise

Replica of Shakespeare statue in Ballarat by Andor Meszaros - who sculpted the Tasman Trophy (which we've both won!)

Story of the replica

Mon 9 aug - the Buda side ... the Royal Palace

Their "statue of liberty" on Citadel Hill

Had dinner with Bill Elliott (US team flying JS1 which he took delivery of here) and new non-gliding wife Carol - discussing JS1s & we mentioned Bruce Taylor had bought a JS1 instead of coming to the world comps - Carol looked accusingly at Bill and said "you mean there was a CHOICE!"

In our next exciting episode ...
- our heroes go trailer touring back to Denmark

Part 6 - And then there was one ...

In our last episode ...
- open class had flown 8 (crap) comp days so far

Fri 6 aug (last scheduled comp day) - forecast: upper trough, intensifying, in W, slowly moving E, very heavy thunderstorms due unstable air & wind shear
Warnings - SUPERCELLS & SQUALL LINE ARE POSSIBLE WITH STORMY GUSTS (90 KPH <) & LARGE HAIL (2 CM<) HUGE AREA!!!
Oh & for all this, the max lift would be < 1.2 mps!
Straight after briefing, David derigged - so Tom became "the last Aussie standing" on the grid - just in time for cancellation.
Normally we'd hate to lose a last day (or any day) - but with all that's happened & the look of the weather, we weren't sorry!
Towed back to derig before the storm hit - found a spot a little away from the other open class - noticed a black BMW park behind our glider, a guy with a full arm tattoo left the engine running, walked towards us like he was about to talk to us, then walked away - a few mins later the beemer was gone - that's funny, wonder where he went .... another few mins later I decided to photograph the last derig - went to our car (in front of the trailer) to get my camera & discovered my bumbag was missing from the front seat - ah so that's where he went! Wallet, all the cash we'd withdrawn for our accom but not paid due the disagreement over price, credit cards, licence, camera, phone (Aussie & Hungarian sims), leatherman & worst of all my glasses (so beautifully repaired in Germany!) - all gone! I usually wore the bumbag, Tom usually carried the cash & we'd been paranoid about locking the car - but it never occurred to us to lock it while derigging just 10m away! Thankfully while I rushed off to cancel everything, Tom got derigging help from two Danes & Alex, a German about to move to Benalla (so please look after him there!) - and Dave & Lesley helped Schmiddy pack up the donga - then to Tesco to withdraw more money & buy a pair of reading glasses - then to the Police station (they're probably about sick of Aussies!) - an hour to get an interpreter - 2.5 hours to write a report - they wanted to know (inter alia) the car registration & the guy's eye-colour (like they're gonna catch him!) - after the best details I could give of someone I hadn't paid much attention to, they asked "did he look like a gypsy?" - well ... yes! After Tom cleaned out the back of the van & rewired all his instruments while he was waiting (he wasn't allowed in), he met a Swede also waiting to report a theft from his hotel room - the guy said "will you ever come back to this country?" - I can't print what Tom said!

So many people we spoke to had similar experiences ... one Brazilian had lost his Colibri & PDA on the 3rd night (we took everything detachable out every night) - the Danes had lost the seats & wheels off their mountain bikes chained up at their hotel early on!

So even on a non-flying day we only had time for a 2 sec swim before the final dinner. Our tickets were in my stolen wallet but they weren't checking them - so twice as many came as had tickets - so we braved the queues to grab some tucker before it ran out - worth the wait - the Goulash & even the Thai green chicken curry were pretty good! Ironically, after the first week's heatwave, we had to brave quite a chill to stand outside (teeny bopper music inside) to farewell friends we may not see for another few years ...

Bottom line is Tom came 27th (/43), 5376 pts (vs Michael Sommer's 6834) - not as well as he did in Mafikeng - but a great effort in this weather - and I'm proud to say he played the game right to the bitter (very bitter) end - and immensely grateful he's still here!

In the next exciting episode ...
- will our heroes survive a couple of days in Budapest while the Nimbus gets a few little paint touch ups (only 2 of which we gave cause for!)
- how long will it take to drive back to Denmark?

PS sorry no photos for obvious reasons!

Part 5 - And then there were two ...

In our last episode ...
- the first comp week had 3 cancelled days & 4 comp days with speeds of 80-100kph in open class (ie CRAP for the uninitiated)
- the Aussie team was rocked by an accident involving one of its own

Sun 1 aug - forecast: high pressure ridge, W wind, airmass will become more & more stable, sunny day with good thermal activity, Cbs E & N.
Yep, more stable - so they tasked 'em further!
(wearing our sponsor's t-shirts - Shinzo kindly lent his Nimbus 4DM for Tom to practice)

Tom found some new playmates in the Yanks & Brits ...
"The organisers landed out ALL gliders today*1. Yesterday the forecast said "not suitable for cross country soaring" - most of us got home. Today the met said "more stable, so better!" It WAS more stable but NOT better! The first turn for Open class was in the middle of a hilly area with no landing possibilities for about 15km, thermals were 1-2kts [at best] to about 1500' agl in this area. I was almost the first there but had to escape 90 degrees to track for about 12km to get a climb [I was looking for a field to fire up over] The gaggle rolled me there but by the second turn I was in the top three. After some lucky low saves and a second Danube crossing I joined with the US team of Ron Tabery and Garret Willat and with UK pilot Pete Harvey as well. Ron was a little behind but with our info [to stay in 1 kt!] won the day and I managed 7th for 957 pts bringing me up to 19th.
Stats for the day: 37% thermalling, 1.1 kt avg, 87.7:1 overall L/D.
David had a bad run and you know about Graham*2. I was alone or in good company today so no scares.
Many 15M class gliders landed in Serbia and last heard crews were still waiting at the border to get in!
I hope tomorrow is shorter, over 6.30 today."
Fixed task, 438k, Tom 7th, 311k, 957 pts

1. Don't think a total landout has been achieved at a world comp since Benalla 1987!
2. On saturday Graham had a couple of close calls pre-start and an outlanding in a corn field 90m short of the finish ring. On sunday he decided to withdraw from the comp - so then there were 2 ...
(the Brit camp under an AN2 complete with pool!)

(Trailer convey ready for departure)

Mon 2 aug - some time in the middle of the night (0645) Schmiddy rang to say the day was cancelled - funny, we thought, it's sunny - you'd think they'd just cancel 15M class (who'd had all-nighters getting back from Serbia) ... when we finally awoke from our sleepy stupor we checked the WGC page - arrgghh - the cancellation IS only 15M class - scramble - fortunately we're finally getting organised - we debug, rewater & refuel at night so all we have to do in the morning is an engine run, quick wipe, weigh & grid.
Forecast: relatively high pressure system, dry air, max temp & Cu-developing temp close to each other, variable & usually weak wind
Unfortunately Tom didn't stick with his new playmates ...
"I had a reasonable run until I left a messy gaggle and got rolled. Climbs were better higher and I just didn't connect. Later I left a group again to go in a different direction and they beat me home by 15 mins! Today we MAY have tasked in Australia, the first day this is so."
Graham & Mark left to drive to Frankfurt & fly home early.
3hr AAT, Tom 32nd, 322k @ 97kph, 795 pts

Tue 3 aug - at briefing, the organisers actually apologised to 15M class for landing them in Serbia with the consequent retrieve difficulties - huge applause!
(car towing the cmelak - before that he used to fly to the grid - he doesn't do taxi!)
Forecast: cold front from the NW, more unstable, few Cu late afternoon, however, W of Danube thunderstorms possible from noon, wind will turn NW gradually
Tom says "Today was the fastest of the comp. I started late and was still with a good pack, SS, XXL and A at the second turn. After that the difference between 800kg and 850kg started to tell and I fell off the back, also slower on final glide."
Fixed task, 427k, Tom 17th, 110 kph, 819 pts - first time > 100kph - the winner did a staggering 122kph - wooo (pause) hooo!

We attempted to pay our accom - Laszlo (our landlord) really wants euro but neither banks, money changers nor machines give it - so we withdrew squillions of HUFs but then ... when we'd first arrived a few days earlier than booked, Laszlo (with no English) told us via his daughter (limited English) we could have the basement room one night (40E) then move into an a/c room upstairs (50E) - meanwhile Lars & Heinz were sharing a room - a few days later Laszlo asked us to swap with Lars so that Lars & Heinz could have separate adjoining rooms - we weren't keen to move up another floor (no lift) to a room with a single attic skylight (no windows) but did it to help Lars out - now it turns out that room is 60E not 50 - very difficult to negotiate with no common language! Meanwhile the Brazilians are also unhappy - one is Hungarian born so we're awaiting the results of his negotiations.

Peter Carey, Hungarian born Benalla member (who's been an invaluable assistance to Schmiddy re the Lars affair) organised dinner for us at the home of his friends, Willie & Kate - delicious paprika lamb hot pot with potatoes, pasta and salad, accompanied by home-made Palinka (rocket fuel) from home-grown fruit - sitting in their backyard under said fruit trees on a beautiful evening marred only by the number of bities & smell of anti-bitie stuff we had to use. Since the heatwave finished, the AN2 had stopped its regular spray-runs over the city.

Wed 4 aug - more rain, who would've thought?
Forecast: waving frontal zone (looks like a quasi stationary front) approaching, unstable air, chance of convective precipitation, cloudy, rain showers or thunderstorms possible, fresh NW wind in W
Cancelled for open and 18M
Rebrief at 1200 for 15M - they did 2hr AAT - Al Tyler from the (southern) US made it home for the first time this comp - his crew muttering something about "we've dern more marls on the ground than you've dern in the air!"

On Beryl's advice, we visited Morahalom, pretty little town about 20k west of Szeged - had a picnic in the park & whadya know, bumped into Beryl on her way to the hot spa.

Then to Szatymaz, the airstrip at the control point about 10k north - cute little A frame huts between the trees along a beautiful green grass strip which they were busy rolling while it was damp - why couldn't they roll some of the bumps out of Szeged? Home for washing, a swim & nana-nap.

Then the International night - great array of popcorn, cheese, salami, pasta, goulash, wine, punch & Pims - most amused at the corn chips & salza at the French table - hellooooo?

Thu 5 aug - forecast: relatively low pressure system, developing convergence line along the Danube with more Cu with lower bases, in other areas less Cu clouds with higher bases, rain showers or thunderstorms possible
With the high numbers, poor conditions & all that's happened (Lars, Graham), it's hard not to be spooked - I find myself turning into a worry wart wife - every time I look up & see a ceiling (not a wall - that implies vertical differentiation) - a ceiling of ridiculously long wings struggling to climb away from launch height or less, I imagine a shower of fibreglass, one of them with 4M on the tail ... just before start we get "Aussie base 4M, I want to lodge an official protest against IP2 - he was way too close" - so we lodged a protest - but at the end of the day after 40 mins stepping back & forwards thru the 2 traces round the time in question, the steward & Tom couldn't find the offending situation - we think Tom's logger's time interval may be slower than the other.
Tom's story: "Today went OK with an early start but I lost 25-30mins under 1000' about 30km from home just over the Serbian border."
3.5 hr AAT - Tom 31st - 333k @ 80.5kph - 553 pts

In our next exciting episode ...
- will our hero get to finish the comp on only 3 cans of avgas?
- how on earth are we going to derig the Nimbus now that Mark, Graham, Lars & Heinz are gone?
